BEES

BEES

This landscape is a pollinator sanctuary designed to be more than just a garden—it’s a high-performance refueling station for the local bee population. By merging the structural wisdom of agroforestry with the biodiversity of permaculture, it addresses the "three pillars" of bee conservation: forage, nesting, and safety.

The Forage: A Year-Round Buffet

The primary goal is to eliminate "floral deserts." In this infant stage, the focus is on establishing a staggered bloom calendar so there is never a day without nectar.

  • The Overstory: Young, bee-friendly trees like Black Locust, Linden, or native Willows are being established to provide "mass flowering" events in the sky.
  • The Understory: Drifts of lavender, borage, and rosemary are planted in high-density "islands" to help bees minimize energy expenditure while foraging.
  • The Wild Edge: A dedicated "zone 5" area where native wildflowers and "weeds" like dandelions and clover are intentionally left to flourish.

The Habitat: Beyond the Hive

While most people think of honeybees, this project prioritizes 70% of bee species that live in the ground or wood.

  • Bare Earth Patches: Small, sunny areas of well-drained soil are kept clear of mulch to allow ground-nesting bees to burrow.
  • The "Log Hotel": Fallen logs and upright "snags" from the agroforestry thinning are drilled with various hole sizes to mimic beetle bores for solitary mason and leafcutter bees.
  • Water Stations: Shallow stone basins filled with pebbles allow bees to land and drink safely without the risk of drowning.

The Strategy: Chemical-Free Resilience

In line with permaculture ethics, this project acts as a biological buffer.

  • Companion Planting: Using aromatic herbs to confuse pests, eliminating the need for neonicotinoids or toxic sprays that harm bee nervous systems.
  • Succession: Fast-growing "pioneer" flowers like buckwheat are used as green manure, providing instant food for bees while the slower-growing perennial shrubs mature.
